Pyongyang: North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has denounced the growing military ties between the United States, Japan, and South Korea, accusing them of escalating regional tensions. He vowed to take countermeasures, including further development of North Korea’s nuclear capabilities, state media KCNA reported on Sunday.
During a visit to North Korea’s defense ministry on Saturday, coinciding with the country’s Army founding day, Kim criticized Washington’s deployment of strategic nuclear assets, joint military drills, and increased military coordination with Tokyo and Seoul. He claimed these actions were disrupting the military balance in the region and posing a serious threat to security.
"The DPRK does not seek unnecessary tensions but will take continuous countermeasures to maintain regional military equilibrium," Kim stated.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump, following a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba on Friday, expressed a willingness to engage with North Korea over its nuclear program. However, Kim reaffirmed his commitment to enhancing Pyongyang’s nuclear forces, reiterating an "unshakable policy" in this regard.
Addressing the ongoing war in Ukraine, Kim reaffirmed North Korea’s support for Russia, citing the spirit of their comprehensive strategic partnership treaty. "The army and people of the DPRK will firmly support and encourage Russia in its efforts to safeguard sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity," he said.
Last month, South Korea accused North Korea of preparing to send additional troops to Russia, in addition to the estimated 11,000 soldiers reportedly deployed over the past three years.
